FCL vs LCL: which is right for your shipment?

How full-container and shared-container shipping differ, and how to choose between them.

4 min read

The short version

FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire container. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your goods share a container with other shippers' cargo and you pay for the space you use.

When LCL makes sense

LCL usually suits smaller volumes — often under around 15 CBM — and first or trial orders.

  • You only pay for the volume you ship
  • Good for testing a new supplier or product
  • Extra handling at consolidation and destination warehouses

When FCL makes sense

As volume grows, a dedicated container often becomes the more economical and simpler option.

  • Sealed at origin, opened at destination
  • Less handling of your goods
  • Usually faster through warehouses
