Container sizes explained: 20', 40' and 40' High Cube

Nominal dimensions and practical capacity of the most common sea containers.

3 min read

The three common sizes

  • 20' Standard — about 33 CBM nominal, roughly 25–28 CBM practical load
  • 40' Standard — about 67 CBM nominal, roughly 55–58 CBM practical load
  • 40' High Cube — about 76 CBM nominal, roughly 65–68 CBM practical load; an extra 30 cm of height

Weight limits

Heavy goods such as tiles or machinery can reach the weight limit before the container is full. A 20' container is often the better choice for dense cargo.
